For a summer party try one of the box wines. I have tried several this past year with mixed results. The box wines are some of the biggest values out there. For the most part the quality is ok... it's drinkable and some actually taste good. I suggest sticking with a white or rose-blush. A red is even ok chilled and served with some summer grilling like steak or hamburgers. You can have some bottles on hand to, but the box wine is nice in that you can keep a large amount cold in the fridge for the length of the party.

For the beginner I recommend something a wine snob would scoff at. I recommend trying any thing from the brand Wild Vines. They should be found at any store for under $5.00 They come in many fruit flavors. The alcohol content is comparatively low. They resemble a fruit punch with a slight wine flavor. They are great ice breakers into the world of wine. Most people can stand to drink them even if they have never had alcohol before. A step up would be any of Gallo's cafe' brand wines. They resemble a true wine flavor with less alcohol. This is more of a palatable first taste to many. I would recommend Gallo for those who drink already, but shy away from wine.

I am Mike and I am a wine-o. I love wine, I love making wine, I love drinking wine, I love smelling wine, I even love just looking at wine. What turned me into a wine-o?
First of all I am not a wineo in the sense of living on the street drinking mad dog. I am a wineo in the sense of being a lover of wine. Perhaps it was growing up in California where family gatherings always included wine. It might have been that first taste that I almost spit out, but swallowed instead knowing it must be something good.
My love for wine has been an acquired taste. I now enjoy making wine at home and like many novice winemakers dream of opening my own winery. I believe wine should be enjoyed by all and no one should be intimidated by wine.
